Manchester United: Robin Van Persie deal close

Yesterday was another exasperating day for Manchester United fans with Lucas Moura confirming a move to PSG and the Robin Van Persie saga seemingly nowhere near completion.

But, aside from Sir Alex’s latest comments, rumours within the industry persist that Robin Van Persie will soon become a Manchester United player and that this is the only likely destination for the superstar.

The Telegraph reported late last night that Sir Alex has agreed to pay Van Persie a top wage at Old Trafford – commensurate with that of Wayne Rooney at around the £220k per week mark. This may seem surprising to many who have seen United exercise caution in the market and invest mainly in youth over the last few years. But it also adds weight to the notion, first expounded by Wigan Chairman Dave Whelan, that this is going to be the last year of management for the inimitable Scot. If Fergie is indeed leaving soon then he certainly deserves a splurge on some established class for a change.

The potential partnership of Wayne Rooney and RVP will not only leave neutrals excited but may even perhaps pique the curiosity of Manchester United’s biggest rivals. Partnering these two is like conducting some kind of hitherto unseen chemical experiment between two highly explosive substances in an attempt to find a footballing god particle. They are both very intelligent footballers so the idea that they are too similar will largely fall on deaf ears. This is a match made in heaven.

As the end of the summer transfer window comes into view in the distance, Manchester United fans have more reason than most to bite their finger nails. Shinji Kagawa again impressed last night in the second half of a workmanlike performance for Manchester United against an ever brilliant Barcelona. Manchester United held their own during a 0-0 game (which United lost on pens) but it was as clear as ever that they lack that bit of extra fairy dust that their top opponents have. United have many great qualities but RVP will add the teeth in attack and touch of class that may complete the Manchester side once more.
