A report in the sometimes seemingly spurious but sporadically solid Mirror states that Chelsea’s pursuit of one transfer target may meet an unsuccessful conclusion.
Despite snaring the brilliant Oscar, the highly dangerous Hazards and the less momentus Marin so far this summer, there are still definite question marks over the defence, and reinforcements are perhaps required also for the striking section.
After a disappointing, if not particularly worrying pre-season, Chelsea may still have some business to do before the window closes in a few weeks.
A long term transfer target is Porto’s Hulk. But the aforementioned tabloid suggests that Zenit may have outmuscled Chelsea with a £40m bid.
Many would imagine that The Premier League would be a more exciting and marginally warmer destination for the Brazilian but, as Chelsea fans know better than most, money speaks volumes and if the bid is solid then the Stamford Bridge outfit may have to look elsewhere – or just dig even deeper.
Many fans think that it is in defence where Chelsea are really short and that finances should be concentrated there instead. On this front, Marseille say that they have recieved a bid for their Spanish right back Cesar Azpilicueta, which could well be accepted in the next few days.
We shall keep you abreast of developments.
