Chelsea: What will the team look like this season?

It would take a fool to argue that Chelsea haven’t conducted the best business of the summer window so far. The Oscar deal is all but done. Marin is in. And Eden Hazard will have Chelsea fans dribbling uncontrollably before August is out. One can only imagine how good the link up play between he, Mata, Ramires and Oscar will be as the season, and their understanding, develops.

Smaller, technically gifted players seem to be very en vogue these days and Chelsea are certainly becoming an advocate of ‘small football’. Jose Mourinho carved Chelsea’s name into the history books by recruiting big athletes like Drogba, Essien and Mikel. But the modern football mantra (as defined by Barcelona) is that if you never give the ball away you don’t actually need the monolithic man mountains in your team to win it back. Who knows, in years to come, people like Peter Crouch may need to sleep in a flower press in order to get a game. With City following the same line, and Manchester United also planning big recruitment, we think that The Premier League is going to be better than ever this time out.

But Chelsea will be looking to build on their brilliant and unexpectedly successful season in 2011/12. They will want the league back and this may just be the team to do it. You wouldn’t bet against this lot, regardless of the opposition. Would you? With Hulk and a right back to be potentially added before the window closes, Chelsea look in rude health.

Cech  – back to his best

Cole   – never far from his best

Ivanovic – towering at centre back

Terry – excellent EURO 2012 despite race row

Luiz –   so much talent but a liability in the centre. Put him on the right for god’s sake

Essien  Can anchor midfield if fit. Still the best at what he does

Ramires – Chelsea’s best player last season will improve again

Hazard – saliva overload

Mata – nothing the Mata with Juan

Oscar   a creator and a finisher a la Kaka

Torres – will score loads of goals or be replaced by Hulk

So how do you think Chelsea will line up?
