Manchester United covet quintet

With the feverish transfer speculation doing the rounds at this time of year it’s always good to decant that conjecture, to seperate the wheat from the chaff, as it were.

If all of it were to be believed Manchester United would be welcoming a good 500 new players to Old Trafford by August but United obviously have serious targets and it seems to me that the following are actually on the radar of Sir Fergie of all that is good. How many will join Kagawa at United?

Leighton Baines –  I have to admit that this lad does have a great delivery on him and perhaps seems more likely to get assists than Patrice Evra. But, at 27, is he really worth the hassle? Evra is the best left-back I have seen at United and that includes Denis Irwin. Sure he’s 31 and hasn’t been quite as good in recent times but he can still do the business and deserves another year as first choice because he has embodied everything that is good about Manchester United during his time at the club – which also happens to be the most successful period in United’s history. This isn’t a coincidence for me. Evra is pure class. Sorry Leighton, but I’d rather wait for the Fabio egg to hatch and spend the money on other areas.

Robert Lewandowski – ‘He big, he’s strong, he’ll score goals all day long, Robert Lewandowski, Robert Lewandowski.’ Ok the chant needs work but the player himself looks pretty complete. With 30 goals in all competitions for German champions Dortmund (and another for Poland on Friday) , he clearly knows where the goal is. His national coach has already suggested that he is United bound, to add credibility to the rumours. The one reservation I have about him is that, whilst no slouch, he doesn’t look like the quickest striker in the world. As good as Ruud Van Nistelrooy was, United became a bit predictable with him in the side and Fergie will want to proliferate the idea of a rapier quick, kaleidoscopic attack in his latest team rebuild. It looks as if this deal could well be a goer however.

Luka Modric – We don’t want to insult our highly knowledgeable readership by telling you what you already know about this player. We think he’s ripe for a move but the real question is whether United still have the financial clout to broker such a deal. What we will say however is that, if you saw Croatia vs Ireland and Holland vs Denmark at the weekend you would have to say that, on these performances alone, Wesley Sneijder is a bigger player than Modric. A strange comment perhaps, considering that Holland lost while Croatia won. And of course they fulfill different functions within their respective teams. But while Modric is a classy and quiet facilitator, Sneijder looks like a really world class game-changer to me. He’s got the lot that lad. Like Paul Scholes in his pomp.

Nick Powell –  An 18 year old attacking midfielder with a good eye for goal, this signing looks as good as done. He won’t cost the earth and if it does all go tits up then Fergie can sell him for nearly as much as he paid. A highly likely acquisition providing they can beat off the competition.

Angelo Henriquez – He’s only 18 but this Chilean youngster absolutely stinks of goals. With 8 goals in 10 games for club and 5 in 8 as a youth international, he positively reeks of the blighters.
