Manchester United to continue recruitment drive

The speculation this morning suggests that Manchester Unityed are far from finished in the transfer market and plan to raid Tottenham for Luka Modric next.

The ever more sensational Daily Mail links Manchester United with about 20 new messiahs every day but they are persisting with the story about Modric to Manchester United. They got it right last year when they suggested that Samir Nasri was Manchester City bound so I’ll give them some slack. For now.

With Chelsea drunk on other new signings the time may be right for Manchester United to make their move for the Croatian genius who would surely enhance a new look midfield, already under reconstruction with the signing of Shinji Kagawa from Borussia Dortmund. Modric simply doesn’t give the ball away. He has a great engine, sublime touch and x-ray vision that will bring the best out of Manchester United’s other creative talents.

Let’s face it, when you look at what City and Chelsea are doing there is little option but for United to spend big this summer. They have a great squad but need to add a little fairy dust. If Wigan chairman Dave Whelan is to be believed and this is to be Sir Alex Ferguson’s final year, he surely deserves the leaving present of an open cheque book to buy his way to football paradise in his last season at the club. Instead of abusing his watch and biting the heads off fourth officials, he has undoubtedly earned the right to sit back and watch his side comfortably battering all comers in his swansong season.

Whatever does happen, few can debate that Modric would improve Manchester United. It would probably take quite a lot more money than the £22m being quoted by the publication, to lever Modric from White Hart Lane, but I reckon that the player himself would be excited by the prospect.
