Manchester United’s New Look Midfield?

The agent of Dimitar Berbatov recently stated that the reason the Bulgarian was no longer required at Old Trafford was because Sir Alex Ferguson was building his next team and wanted to inject more pace into it. Exciting sentiments indeed.

Admittedly it’s been a difficult season for United and, if they don’t win The Premier League, it will have become a particularly poor one. But looking beyond this spring, if we may, the thought of the old master putting his final, all conquering team together does sound fascinating. If we are to believe that Fergie still has the magic touch then all that he has learnt over the years could be channelled into creating the finest Manchester United yet.

It does sound likely that Fergie wants more pace. His best teams (the incarnations of the mid-nineties and 2007-2009) had pace to burn. Kanchelskis, Giggs and latterly, Rooney and Ronaldo flying down the channels and providing rapier counter attacking thrust. But it’s not just up front where such speed is necessary. We have discussed the notion for some time now, that United are somewhat sluggish in midfield. Carrick is quality but not exactly fast. Scholes still shines but lacks his previous pace. Anderson, Fletcher and Giggs offer sturdy support through the middle but also without pace.

The team of tomorrow, the team that can match Barcelona, would have to have great speed of thought and foot in the midfield. For this reason I would like to see United go for Luka Modric, Iker Muniain and Eden Hazard – all achievable targets and players who would bring the house down at Old Trafford. Modric would cost a pretty penny and many would argue that the money would be better spent on his colleague, the masterful Gareth Bale. Few would debate the fact that Bale could thrive at Old Trafford but the money being asked for him is crazy. So Nani and Young can provide cover down the left until Bale is closer to the end of his contract! With Valencia on fire on the right, this could well  be the midfield come August.

Nani/Young         Modric           Hazard/Muniain         Valencia

I think that United could do with one more striker as Berbatov, Macheda and probably Owen will leave. The defence is still solid for me so United mainly need to concentrate on getting some magic for the midfield – these three would provide an abundance of the stuff.

I think we should go for modric and bale, maybe an unknown striker, and a defender, then we are sorted.

To start with that midfield would be suicide… no balance whatsoever, just offensive players. Stop playing FM!

Attack has always been the best form of defence. Its the way Barcelona play – and its very effective. I would go for that sort of midfield. We need skill, vision, speed of thought and speed of feet.

should be HAZARD, scholes, modric , valencia next year, give munian time to settle as hes very young, althought hazard is young i think he posseses the ability and character to walk straight into the team not sure about munian, scholes would be a deep lying play maker, protecting the back four but also starting off the play, valencia always does his defensive duties aswell as attacking ones
