It has been announced by the FA that England manager Fabio Capello has resigned after emergency discussions between himself and the governing body, regarding his public opposition to John Terry being stripped of the England captaincy.
It’s terrible timing, with Euro 2012 only a matter of months away, and leaves the England team in disarray. Capello’s time as England manager hasn’t exactly been littered with glory but this is a particularly ignominious end to another ill-fated England stewardship.
If ever there was a poisoned chalice in management, this surely has to be it. Will anyone ever succeed again as England manager? Does Harry Redknapp really want the job?
It seems that he does and my money is on him leading England to Euro 2012 whether in a full or part time capacity. The timing of his acquittal on fraud charges could not have been better and he is now free to lead England if he so desires. The biggest losers, in the short term, will be the Tottenham fans who may well be deprived of one of the best coaches in their history. Harry will almost certainly finish the season with Tottenham and the fans will hope that he only takes the England position temporarily.
Developments over the next few days should be very interesting but this is certainly a dramatic and unforeseen turn of events.
