With things being so horrible to watch on the field of play for Manchester United fans right now they can only take solace in thoughts of a brighter future. This future would, for a growing number of Manchester United fans, exclude David Moyes and include some fine additional playing talent.

The Daily Mail today reports that Manchester United are still keen on a very expensive and very good player:

Manchester United’s hopes of signing Edinson Cavani hinge on the club retaining their Champions League status.

The Uruguayan features highly on manager David Moyes’ summer transfer hitlist as he looks to rebuild his struggling team.

But Cavani is unsure whether a summer move to Old Trafford represents a forward step in his career.

Playing Champions League football was a key factor for Cavani when he moved from Napoli to Paris St Germain last summer.

We can’t see how Manchester United are going to get back into The Champions League next, or any season for that matter, under David Moyes. Furthermore, Cavani is too expensive and not young enough to drive the next Manchester United side to glory. One big injury and £60m worth of talent is tied up on the sidelines.

We think that Brendan Rodgers got it spot on at Liverpool. In Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho he has brought in two brilliant youngsters with the hunger and capacity to improve. They are precisely the sorts of players that Sir Alex used to love buying for Manchester United – footballers who hadn’t yet proven themselves or reached their potential.

We think that, whoever the boss, Manchester United should be bringing in younger players, around the 20-23 age range. Players like Mangala, Shaw, Townsend and Moura who can shape the next great Manchester United side.

Let’s see Cavani in action. Manchester United fans – is he worth the wonga?
