Tottenham fans will probably wake up with a warm feeling in their bellies this morning after their best result of the season in the Champions League last night. They can take further heart from the story linking them with Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen.
Just weeks after his compatriot, the whizzkid Eden Hazard, expressed an interest in joining the club in the summer Vertonghen’s team mate has whipped up the hype surrounding the departure of their top centre back. The Daily Mail says,
‘Tottenham Hotspur would be a good club for him,’ Alderwiereld told Dutch daily Voetbal International.
‘They compete at the top and in a beautiful league and also he would have a good chance to be a starting player.’
Now for the personal slant. I saw him play in both legs for Ajax against Manchester Untied and, despite making a mistake for United’s ultimately decisive goal at Old Trafford, he was the stand out performer over the course of the tie. He’s an excellent, authoritative defender but also possesses ability to come forward and affect the game in more offensive areas. He looks to me like a top player and Spurs should pull out all the stops to sign him – they need a rock to play every week at the back and Vertonghen could even go on to captain Spurs – he’s that good.
I’m convinced that ,sooner or later, he will play in the Premier League, and Tottenham would be well advised to get in early.

He’s very good, I agree. You seldom go wrong with an Ajax-educated player.
