Manchester United: Long-term target set to leave club – report

We have always found this one a bit strange. There must have been half a dozen occasions, over the last couple of years, when Benfica centre back Ezequiel Garay has supposedly been close joining Manchester United.

Indeed, in the summer, he told reporters that David Moyes didn’t want him to come to the club even though his predecessor Alex Ferguson was serious about a deal.

The 27-year-old looks like a decent defender but nothing much more than that. Manchester United have a wealth of players for the defensive department. Even if a few of them are well into their 30s Manchester United can also count on the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans.

Even last week it was being reported that the player was on the verge of joining Manchester United. But reports today suggest that he may well go to Zenit St. Petersburg instead.

The Daily Express says:

MANCHESTER UNITED are set to miss out on Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay after Zenit St Petersburg agreed a deal to take the Argentine to Russia.

We don’t think it will be a huge loss to Manchester United if the player decides to go elsewhere. He looks like a fairly solid if unspectacular performer, but hasn’t been a mainstay of the Argentina national team and looks a bit limited on the ball, compared to a player like Rio Ferdinand.

We think that Manchester United should be concentrating on bringing in top quality youngsters who can give a good 8 to 10 years of service to the club. Players like Eliaquim Mangala and Geoffrey Kondogbia may cost a small fortune but they would be worthy investments because they have their best football in front of them.

Let’s take another look at Garay as the story could yet change again. Manchester United fans – do you think Garay is up to scratch and would he add real quality to the squad?
