Chelsea want La Liga wide man – report

Will this guy replace Ashley Cole?

We are now a matter of weeks away from the January transfer window and rumours about who is going where will intensify by the day.

It’s always difficult to separate the nonsense from the stories with substance and the best thing you can do is try to work out what areas of your team most need strengthening.

Most of the rumour surrounding Chelsea transfers has been about the potential signing of another striker. A high-profile goalscorer to finish off all the chances that the Chelsea midfield can create.

But sooner or later Chelsea will also have to deal with the fact that Ashley Cole is well into his 30s. He’s a great athlete and has never really suffered with niggling injuries. But the club will eventually look to replace him with a really top notch left-back.

Some media outlets are today suggesting that Manchester United and Chelsea will go head-to-head in a battle royal for one of the leading young left backs in Europe – 21 year old Sevilla star Alberto Moreno. The Star says:

Both clubs have identified the 21-year-old as the perfect reinforcement for their aging backlines, with the Blues looking to bring in someone to take-over from 32-year-old Ashley Cole and United interested in taking over from Patrice Evra.

Reports in Spain claim the Old Trafford outfit are scouting around for alternatives to Leighton Baines as doubt remain over whether he can be seen as a long-term solution at the age of 28.

Chelsea meanwhile are readying a bid thought to be over £20m for the starlet, who is also still eligible to play in this season’s Champions League.

Apparently he has a release clause of 25m but these clauses seem fairly arbitrary in modern football and can be negotiated.

Anyway, he looks like a really good player with fantastic technique, endurance and speed. Let’s take a look at him in action. Chelsea fans do you think this guy is a patch on Ashley Cole?
