Spurs suffer setback in Sigurdsson chase

Gylfi Sigurdsson looks set to leave Swansea despite Paul Clement keeping them up – but it’s by no means certain that he’ll be joining Tottenham.

The Daily Mail reported last week that Mauricio Pochettino was looking to resign the Iceland international, who left just after the Spurs boss took charge at the club. It’s thought Pochettino played no part in that decision.

The Lilywhites once again find themselves searching for a new playmaker, with Ross Barkley set to prove too expensive.

However, with Barkley expected to leave Everton with just a year left on his contract, the Mirror report that Everton have struck first blood in pursuit of Sigurdsson.

Swansea have agreed a £25million deal with the Toffees, though his wage demands are an issue.

The 27-year-old earns £80,000 a week at the Liberty Stadium, but his representatives have made it clear he wants £120,000 a week from Everton.

Even if that does scupper the deal, those wages are also beyond Tottenham’s budget, who only pay Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris in excess of £100,000 a week.

Sigurdsson evidently knows his worth having contributed nine goals and provided 13 assists this season.
