Liverpool had one very good reason to reject Palace’s Benteke bid

Liverpool’s decision to reject Crystal Palace’s latest bid for unwanted striker Christian Benteke may have left many of their fans completely bewildered as to what will become of the striker.

The Eagles were hoping to have signed the Belgian in time for their visit to Tottenham on Saturday but have now been knocked back.

It was initially widely reported that Palace had offered £30million, just £2.5million short of what the Reds paid Aston Villa for Benteke.

However, Sky Sports have now explained that that fee is actually £23million, with the other £7million coming in add-ons.

And the plot thickens. Add-ons are usually inserted as a clause in players’ contracts allowing the selling club to profit more if certain eventualities happen, such as the buying club winning a cup, or the player scoring a set number of goals.

Palace, a little cheekily perhaps, were offering to front up the rest of the money if they achieved a top four finish this season – which, understandably, Liverpool laughed out of the room.

Jurgen Klopp has no place for Benteke in his attack, but is also keen not to make too much of a loss financially.

If this deal is therefore going to go ahead, Palace are going to have to come back with a much more serious offer.
