Man United in shock swoop for Real Madrid defender

Raphael

MANCHESTER UNITED have stepped up their interest in Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

The French international has featured regularly in La Liga this season for the Spanish giants but has again found himself behind Sergio Ramos and Pepe in the pecking order for key matches.

And that, according to Le 10 Sport, has forced Varane to consider a move this summer and the 23-year-old is aware there are clubs chasing his signature.

United and Bayern Munich are the frontrunners, while French outfit Paris St Germain are also understood to be keen.

Varane turned down a move to United back in 2011 when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge, with the Red Devils ending up signing Phil Jones from Blackburn instead.

However, United have been heavily linked with a renewed bid for Varane and the former Lens centre-back is interested in the challenge of moving to Old Trafford.

Whether there’s any substance to these reports depends largely on who is managing United next season.

Jose Mourinho is still heavily favoured to get the job and he is a big fan of Varane, having worked with the youngster during his reign at Real Madrid.

The other key factor is whether or not United can make a late charge and clinch a top four spot in the Premier League this season – something PSG can guarantee Varane next campaign.

Will Varane be a Man United player next season?
