Manchester United linked to €83.2m deal – is this the A-list signing? We hope not

We have a strong sense that Manchester United will make another marquee signing, a la Angel Di Maria, this summer.

They have let a lot of players go and it looks as if the squad will be strengthened with players like Darmian, Schneiderlin, Otamendi and possibly Lloris.

But, on top of all that, we suspect that Manchester United will have another massive splurge on some more fairy dust – a match-winning talent who costs the earth.

But we have to say that the latest one to be linked is pretty underwhelming.

If you are going to sign an A-lister then make it someone with real magic in their feet – a Bale, Ronaldo, Felipe Anderson, Pogba or someone of that ilk. Not Thomas Muller. The Star reports:

Bayern Munich will be reluctant to sell Muller, but United chief executive Ed Woodward remains confident of landing him in a £60m (83.2m Euros) deal.

It’s difficult to sniff at a player who has accomplished so much. At 25 he hasn’t only witnessed, but been central to, a World Cup win for his country and a Champions League medal with his club. He scored 15 goals last year for Germany and was the top scorer in the entire tournament in 2010 at just 20 years of age.

But, when you watch him play, it may be efficient and productive, but it’s hardly delightful on the eye. Muller is a winner. A goal poacher and an intelligent footballer.

Muller: Good but not great

Muller: Good but not great

But his football intelligence definitely trumps any physical quality. He’s not particularly elegant, fleet-footed or explosive. He won’t force the jaw to drop with a piece of bewitching skill. And, at a whopping £60m, he’s just not worth the money for us.

Of course he may make Manchester United more successful. But United fans want to see spectacular footballers, not Machiavellian poachers who have good stats but don’t have the ability to really WOW the audience.

For us, it’s a waste of money. Manchester United fans: thoughts?

Are you joking with your comments? You have never watched Muller then!!
He is by far Bayern’s best player and that is even though he is played out of position. This guy is a big game player quick, clever, skilful and tenacious and most important a team player. Those who are looking for that technically gifted elegant player, I am sorry but 7 times out of 10 they don’t bring much to the party like Nani, Ozil, Di maria
