Bayern legend explains why United target Muller is struggling under Ancelotti

Manchester United continue to be linked with Thomas Muller despite little progress seemingly being made on a deal.

The out-of-sorts World Cup winner is rumoured to be leaving Bayern Munich after enduring such a difficult period since Carlo Ancelotti took over from Pep Guardiola.

The Germany international has scored just four goals this season, a measly follow-up to his 32 last term.

Bayern more generally have found it difficult to adopt to Ancelotti’s approach. They’ve spent some of the first half of the season behind RB Leipzig, though they’ve now rectified that and look on course for yet another Bundesliga title.

Yet, it seems Muller’s troubles are irrelevant for the Bavarians. Club legend Lothar Matthaus insists there isn’t really a way back for the attacking midfielder, as he just doesn’t fit in with Ancelotti’s tactics.

Writing in German publication Bild, Matthaus explained:

“It will be really tough for Muller to fight himself back into the starting XI in the second half of the season. There is not really a position in Ancelotti’s formation that suits him.

“Arjen Robben is a better option on the right wing and Bayern do not really play with a support striker.

“They are playing an attacking midfielder behind Robert Lewandowski instead and I think Thiago Alcantara is the right man for that role. He is much more flexible than Muller.”

The 27-year-old would not come cheap were Jose Mourinho to affirm his interest, and it’s fair to say United already have plenty of options in the kind of role he plays.

Even if it’s not to United, it still seems that Muller could be on the move, as it’s hard to see him thriving for as long as Ancelotti remains at the Allianz Arena.
