Manchester United’s hunt for a central midfielder goes on as they look for a long-term successor to Michael Carrick.
Jose Mourinho will be pleased with his work in the transfer window so far, having brought in Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku.
The latter was the most significant coup, not least because the Red Devils fought off interest from Chelsea to sign the striker. The Daily Mail report they are now set to go head-to-head with the Blues again over long-term target Radja Nainggolan.
The Belgian is at the heart of Roma’s midfield and can hold play in midfield, while always being ready to burst forward.
It seems he is attracting United’s attention because Tottenham continue to play hardball regarding Eric Dier. Daniel Levy is refusing to negotiate a deal for the versatile 23-year-old and as United have dealt with him in the past when they signed Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov, they know how difficult he can be to crack.
Nainggolan would be a more than capable alternative, but with Roma having already sold Mohamed Salah to Liverpool, they won’t want to lose another key midfielder.
