Manchester United’s interest in Nemanja Matic does not rule out a move for Monaco’s Fabinho, reports the Independent.
Jose Mourinho is expected to bid for his former Chelsea player, and that initially looked to signal the end of rumours linking the Red Devils with any more central midfielders.
However, it’s thought that Mourinho is particularly keen on Fabinho because of his versatility. Replacing an ageing Michael Carrick in central midfield is one priority, but finding another right-back to provide more competition for Antonio Valencia is another.
As Fabinho played there for the Ligue 1 champions several times last season, United could solve two problems at once with his signing.
Matic, of course, operates strictly in central midfield, but he has little future at Chelsea as the newspaper suggests the Blues will sign Tiemoue Bakayoko – incidentally, also of Monaco – at some point in the coming days.
It certainly looks as if it’s going to be a tough summer for the principality club, who have already lost key midfielder Bernardo Silva and are facing a fight to hold onto Kylian Mbappe.
