Everton can expect to recoup up to £80million for Romelu Lukaku this summer, and a move looks imminent now that the player has made up his mind on his next destination.
Chelsea and Manchester United are the two Premier League clubs who are interested, but the Independent report that the Belgian has opted to return to Stamford Bridge and snub the Red Devils in the process.
It’s claimed United made an approach last week, but they were warned that he is very close to re-signing for Chelsea.
That doesn’t appear to be down to Everton, who would rather deal with United because they would like to ask for Chris Smalling or Sergio Romero in return.
There has always been a sense of unfinished business between Lukaku and Chelsea, and after narrowly missing out on the Premier League Golden Boot to Harry Kane, the 24-year-old now looks like the player Jose Mourinho never believed he would become when he let him leave west London originally.
Were Mourinho able to convince him to join United, it would represent a significant turnaround in their relationship, but Lukaku idolises Didier Drogba and is therefore set for a return to his old club.
