Man United ready to give up pursuit of Spurs star

Manchester United are likely to turn to Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic and give up on signing Eric Dier.

The Manchester Evening News report that Jose Mourinho is keen to find a replacement for Michael Carrick, whose game time will be limited next season if he does sign a new contract.

Dier, who can play in central midfield, central defence, or at right-back, was therefore a prime target. Yet, United officials are reluctant to deal with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and would prefer to speak to Chelsea about the availability of Matic.

Levy is notoriously tough when it comes to transfers, and this summer he could prove a fiercer opponent than ever as he aims to keep the group together.

Spurs are agonisingly close to achieving something special and Dier is crucial to that going forward. They are finally starting to banish their reputation as a selling club, but after another fine campaign, they are likely to be met with several offers for their stars.

As for United, Mourinho’s men are in need of severe improvement and he is expected to be given the funds to ensure that happens. That could see him turn to one of his old Chelsea players in Matic, though signing a centre-back and another striker will be his priorities.
