No matter how much money Jose Mourinho is given to spend this summer, David de Gea could prove to be irreplaceable.
Manchester United fear losing their goalkeeper, who has been the club’s Player of the Season for three years running, to Real Madrid as the European champions search for a replacement for Keylor Navas.
De Gea has come close to moving to the Bernabeu in the past, and now that Los Blancos’ transfer ban is set to end, there’s every chance they could speak to him.
The 26-year-old is hugely popular at Old Trafford, and United and Spain team-mate Ander Herrera insists nobody wants to see him go.
“I tried not to bring up the De Gea to Real Madrid topic,” Herrera said, per the Mirror.
“It’s difficult for him to one day be at one place, and then to be at another the next.
“He learned a lot from this. It has made him more mature. I want him to be the one defending Manchester United’s goal.
“Hopefully it will be like that, but anything can happen in football.”
Jose Mourinho has chopped and changed with his defence this season, but thanks to De Gea, United still have one of the best records in the league at the back.
The Red Devils have conceded just 23 goals in 27 games. Only Chelsea and Tottenham have conceded fewer, both Thibaut Courtois and Hugo Lloris having let in 21 each.
