The last time Liverpool signed a player called Mario it didn’t work out too well for them.
However, that’s not the only reason Reds fans will be a little confused by reports coming out of Goal.com.
Their Liverpool correspondent Melissa Reddy has suggested that Jurgen Klopp is open to a reunion with Borussia Dortmund’s Mario Gotze.
Reddy is usually a reliable source, so she no doubt has this on good authority.
It raises serious questions about the club’s recruitment policy, though.
Only recently did BVB get to the bottom of the injury problems that have plagued his career in recent years, which are apparently the result of a metabolic disorder.
Given the problems Liverpool have had with Daniel Sturridge, you’d think they’d run a mile from a player with such an unfortunate problem.
Yet, as Klopp knows him well from their time together at the Westfalenstadion, he wouldn’t be averse to taking him on.
His compatriot returned to Dortmund last summer after an unhappy spell with Bayern Munich, but his second stint at the club hasn’t seen him fare much better.
On that occasion, he turned down a move to Anfield to stay in the Bundesliga.
Liverpool aren’t thought to be prioritising his signing, but it does beg the question of why they’re even trying to buy him at all.
