Manchester United have missed an opportunity in Morgan Schneiderlin

Morgan Schneiderlin is set to complete his move to Everton after Manchester United accepted an offer of £22million, reports Sky Sports.

The midfielder will once again link up with Ronald Koeman, his former Southampton manager, having failed to make the grade at Old Trafford.

For Everton, this is a massive, albeit an expensive, coup. Koeman will have one eye on a long-term replacement for Gareth Barry in the centre of his midfield, and Schneiderlin is still only 27-years-old.

As for United, they seem to have lost sight of the reason they signed the Frenchman. With Michael Carrick’s contract coming to an end in the summer, Jose Mourinho is still without a proper successor to the former England international.

Schneiderlin could well have been that man. It’s true that he struggled in his first season at United, but there are few players who weren’t detrimentally affected by the pedestrian football of Louis van Gaal.

Mourinho’s task has been to transform the Red Devils into an attacking threat once again, which has left no room for a player like Schneiderlin.

It doesn’t help that he’s competing for a space sometimes filled by Paul Pogba, who is far more adept at bringing the ball up the field, but where Marouane Fellaini is concerned, Mourinho could definitely have made allowances to accommodate the imminent exile.

And so, United’s loss looks to be Everton’s gain. It seems only a matter of time before United have to dip into the transfer market again.
