Chelsea line up surprise bid for Premier League striker

If Michy Batshuayi’s first season is anything to go by, joining Chelsea as a back-up to Diego Costa is probably a lost cause for most strikers.

The £33million signing from Marseille is understandably growing a little frustrated having failed to start a Premier League game since he arrived at Stamford Bridge.

Few players can compete with an in-form Costa, who is the top flight’s leading goalscorer with 14 goals this term. Even so, the extent to which Batshuayi’s opportunities have been limited ought to put other forwards off if Chelsea come calling in the transfer window.

However, when the alternative is staying at Swansea, Fernando Llorente may have little choice. The Guardian report that Antonio Conte remembers the Spaniard well from their time together at Juventus and would like to bring in the 31-year-old if Batshuayi goes out on loan.

Swansea are obviously reluctant to let their main striker go, as his six goals have been one of the few positives of their miserable campaign.

Things are marginally looking up for the South Wales outfit after the installation of new manager Paul Clement and a much-needed win over relegation rivals Crystal Palace.

Realistically, though, they are going to struggle to hold onto Llorente if Conte does decide to go ahead with his plans.

While Costa is set to remain as Chelsea’s lone striker, the Blues are aware that they are lacking in alternatives if he is injured or suspended, and his compatriot may be happier to sit on the bench than Batshuayi has been.
