They say you can never really separate football and politics.

World events sometimes even put the beautiful game into perspective. It’s almost reached a point where the unthinkable has happened – fans actually seem to care about something, i.e. the US election, more than the Premier League. Utter madness.

As the world woke up to the news that Donald Trump will be the 45th president of America, shockwaves seemed to reverberate around social media.

And while footballers aren’t typically the most insightful of political analysts, quite a few have got it spot on here. Here’s how some of the game’s biggest names reacted:

 

 

 

 

 

Gary Lineker seems to be a self-styled politician these days, but he wasn’t alone in expressing his surprise at the unfolding events.

It sounds like Frank Lampard is treading carefully, as he’s probably living a stone’s throw away from Trump Tower for as long as he stays with New York City FC.
