Juan Mata is set to be offered a new and improved deal having started the season brightly for Manchester United, reports the Mirror.
The Spaniard’s future looked hugely uncertain following the arrival of Jose Mourinho – who sold him from Chelsea in the first place – but he has fought his way into the team.
Mourinho has always maintained that he has no problem with the midfielder, even recently appearing to suggest that it was not his decision to axe him from their former club.
Mata has around 18 months left on his current contract, but he could now commit his future to Old Trafford long-term after clearing the air.
Not only is this an astute move in terms of what he brings to the team on the pitch, it could also be hugely significant for Mourinho in terms of his relationship with the squad.
The Bastian Schweinsteiger affair had raised questions over the Portuguese’s ability to deal with high-profile players tactfully, but Mata has proven that hard work can change Mourinho’s mind.
Keeping Mata will also go down well with the fans, no doubt, so United are definitely making an important move here – and it’s fully deserved after his start to the season, too.
