Jose Mourinho’s rift with Arsene Wenger is a story that goes way back to the Special One’s first stint at Chelsea.
It’s well known that the two managers have little time for each other, but while it’s usually Mourinho who’s on the wind-up, Wenger may have taken the opportunity to publicly embarrass his old rival, according to reports.
According to Spanish publication Marca, the Frenchman refused to let Mourinho sit next to him at a UEFA conference, leading other managers in the room to laugh at the Portuguese.
Mourinho entered the room late, missing part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s speech. It’s not clear if that’s why Wenger reacted the way he did, but when the current Manchester United boss asked if he could sit with him on a table also occupied by Real Madrid’s Zinedine Zidane and PSG’s Unai Emery, he simply replied: “No, it’s not possible”.
That sounds more like something Mourinho would do than Wenger, but you can’t blame the Arsenal manager for growing tired of his United counterpart after years of conflict.
It was Mourinho who infamously called him a “specialist in failure”, so maybe Wenger had every right to act in this way. All the same, it seems a little petty, but it could be an indication that tensions are going to be running higher than ever in this season’s Premier League.
