Mesut Ozil is already pretty revered at Arsenal, but he has probably just gone up even higher in their fans’ estimation.
The playmaker was linked with a move away earlier in the summer after he reportedly grew frustrated at the club’s lack of activity in the transfer market, but it looks like instead, he took matters into his own hands.
In fact, the Germany international was one of the main reasons why Shkodran Mustafi finally moved to North London in a £35million deal.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the centre-back said of his international team-mate:
“We were at the European Championship and we had time to speak.
“He told me about the club, about the team, and the things that he told me made me come here. I noticed that it’s a club where I can develop, where I can grow as a player.
“He said that he’s happy here, that the people are crazy for football and that it’s a team that enjoys playing football the way that he does, the way that I do.”
Just when Gunners fans had all but given up on Arsene Wenger signing a much-needed defender, Mustafi arrived after a protracted transfer saga.
If he plays anything like he did in the Bundesliga, then captain Per Mertesacker may have a job getting back into the team when he returns from injury in December, but that can only be a good thing when it comes to Arsenal’s title chances, which can now be taken seriously again.
