Arsenal were left stunned earlier this week when Leicester City revealed that Riyad Mahrez had signed a contract extension to keep him at the King Power stadium until 2020.
The Algerian was widely expected to leave the Premier League champions, with a number of top clubs circling, but he has now followed in the footsteps of fellow star Jamie Vardy in snubbing the Gunners.
And speaking to Leicester’s official website about his decision to stay, Mahrez explained:
“It’s important because last season we achieved the best thing we could in England.
“We’ve done an amazing season and it was important to keep the players to keep the same spirit as well.”
The playmaker finished last season as the top flight’s highest-scoring midfielder, with 17 goals, also notching up 11 assists along the way.
Leicester could have made a huge profit on a player they signed for less than £1million from Le Havre a year ago, but the fact that he has committed his future to the Foxes will buoy them even more, as Mahrez is absolutely invaluable.
