Just when it looked like Christian Benteke’s move away from Liverpool was on hold, it seems the Belgian striker could now have plenty of destinations to choose from.
The forward has been heavily linked with Crystal Palace, who had a £25million bid for him rejected last month, but Sky Sports understand West Brom have now entered the race for his signature.
It’s understood the Baggies see the 25-year-old as a long-term replacement for Saido Berahino, who hasn’t really been happy in the Midlands for a long time.
And while Tony Pulis would have to break the club’s record transfer fee to bring in Benteke, who will cost at least £30million, it may be a risk worth taking.
West Brom might have banished their reputation as the Premier League’s ‘boing boing’ club, but they may need to sign a few more players if they are to stay safe again this season.
So far, they have signed Matt Phillips from QPR, but no-one else. Benteke would represent one of the biggest signings in their history, and it could just be an important statement of intent.
