Man City in talks over £50million defender

Manchester City have finally begun speaking to John Stones about a possible move away from Everton, according to the Sun.

Even the arrival of manager Ronald Koeman – and even more importantly, the Toffees’ new investors – hasn’t convinced Stones to stay, and he is now set to become the most expensive English defender in history.

Koeman will allow him to leave as long as he can find a replacement, with the same source claiming he is eyeing Sunderland’s Lamine Kone, whose fine displays helped keep the Black Cats up last season.

The same cannot be said of Stones, as his performances were more a hindrance than a help to Everton’s cause under Roberto Martinez. The club turned down summer bids from Chelsea for the player, but then perhaps wished they hadn’t.

It’s no surprise they’re now ready to cash in, even if the club is no longer in need of the money.

Star striker Romelu Lukaku may also leave over the next few weeks, with Chelsea looking his most likely destination.
