Chelsea and Everton vying for Portugal midfielder

It’s fair to say Roman Abramovich must be feeling pretty uncomfortable about this transfer window.

Chelsea’s billionaire owner has spent the past decade at the top of the tree as far as the Premier League is concerned, blowing other clubs out of the water with the Blues’ big-money buys.

However, this summer has been very different, with TV money allowing much more of a level playing field.

Add that to Everton’s recent takeover, and Chelsea face a lot more competition when it comes to bringing in players.

The Toffees are the one club who must be grinding Abramovich’s gears more than most, as not only are they competing with Chelsea for Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, another of Antonio Conte’s targets could also be headed for Goodison Park.

That target is William Carvalho, who the Mirror believe is the subject of a tug-of-war between the two clubs.

The Portugal star, who was instrumental in his country’s triumph at Euro 2016, could leave Sporting Lisbon this summer for £30million.

Everton are believed to be leading the race at the moment, but that could be because Chelsea have already brought in N’Golo Kante in midfield.

Even if Carvalho doesn’t go to either club, though, this scenario suggests a new football order could finally be taking shape.
