Kevin Wimmer is set to stay at Tottenham for the foreseeable future after the Austrian defender signed a new deal.
The centre-back was impressive in his first season at the club, coming in and providing excellent cover for the injured Jan Vertonghen.
Now that Vertonghen will miss the start of the season again after sustaining a knock with Belgium at Euro 2016, Wimmer will be much-needed as Spurs aim to put the slump in form at the end of the last campaign behind them.
Wimmer was rumoured to be attracting interest from Serie A, but he has now committed his future to the North Londoners until 2021.
Despite not being first choice for Mauricio Pochettino’s team, the 23-year-old still made 21 appearances in white and blue after signing from Bundesliga side FC Cologne, as per Spurs’ official website.
Wimmer vs. Vertonghen is a debate that is likely to be reignited by the former’s reemergence in the team at the start of the coming season.
There is a vocal section of the Tottenham faithful who would prefer the young defender to play more regularly, but Vertonghen’s importance to Pochettino is such that he has so far been unwilling to take the risk.
