Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has rejected a move to Manchester United, according to Spanish publication Marca.
Despite having played under Jose Mourinho at the Bernabeu, Varane has snubbed a reunion with his former boss and is now likely to stay with the European champions.
The Frenchman has struggled to break into Zinedine Zidane’s first XI, because his compatriot has understandably favoured the world-class partnership of Sergio Ramos and Pepe.
While that is unlikely to change next season, the 23-year-old is keen to stay on for at least one more year as he attempts to convince Zidane that he can be the club’s long-term replacement for Pepe, who is now 33.
It’s unclear exactly how interested United were in Varane, with Mourinho recently hinting he would only sign one more player and of course, that is expected to be Juventus superstar Paul Pogba.
Although the Red Devils are keen to strengthen their defence as much as possible, their squad is looking increasingly like the finished article, so it is unlikely that other than Pogba, they will be making too many big-money moves.
