Chelsea interest in goalkeeper puts Begovic future in doubt

Conte

Chelsea are interested in signing AC Milan goalkeeper Diego Lopez.

That’s according to the London Evening Standard, who claim that the stopper is being eyed by Blues boss Antonio Conte to boost his back-up options for Thibaut Courtois.

While it is understood Courtois’ place as Chelsea’s number one is safe, their interest in Lopez does cast doubt upon the future of second choice Asmir Begovic.

The latter is the subject of interest from Everton and it may well be best for him to move on after a disappointing first season at Stamford Bridge.

The 29-year-old made 21 appearances in all competitions last season, largely when Courtois was injured or suspended.

The fact that Chelsea now want Lopez suggests the club weren’t particularly impressed by Begovic, whereas Everton are keen to bring him in as first choice to replace Tim Howard, who has returned to his native America.

It’s fair to say Chelsea’s attempts to replace the Bosnian aren’t a spur of the moment thing either. Earlier this summer, Conte attempted to sign Steve Mandanda from Marseille, before the goalkeeper opted for Crystal Palace because he wanted to be in the first team.

Begovic’s time in West London looks to be up, but he proved at Stoke that he is more than capable of being a Premier League number one.
