Tottenham’s Mario Gotze hopes may have just died

Tottenham’s brief hopes of signing Mario Gotze appear to be over.

The Germany international, who famously scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, is on his way out of Bayern Munich, with Spurs and Borussia Dortmund both keen on his signature.

However, the Mirror are now reporting that Gotze favours a move back to his old club, Dortmund, making it very unlikely that he will join Spurs.

Mauricio Pochettino is hoping to add another midfielder to his attack, and Gotze was certainly a tantalising prospect while it lasted.

Realistically, though, the Lilywhites now need to consider other targets.

The 24-year-old was always a long shot, particularly because of the wage he earns at Munich.

It may be a blessing in disguise, nonetheless, as his commitment to moving to Spurs was always questionable. After all, Gotze doesn’t really even want to leave Bavaria in the first place, but is being forced out because he doesn’t feature in new manager Carlo Ancelotti’s plans. And considering he was disappointing for Germany at the Euros, Spurs might not be missing out too much.
