Victor Valdes joins surprise Premier League club

Victor Valdes’ career has taken a surprise turn, with the former Barcelona and Manchester United goalkeeper joining newly-promoted Middlesbrough.

The Daily Mail are reporting that the stopper has signed a two-year deal with the Teeside club, having never really established himself at United.

Valdes was never going to oust David de Gea regularly in the first team, but instead it was Sergio Romero who Louis van Gaal preferred as back-up, with Valdes being loaned out to Standard Liege last season. He made just two appearances for United.

That was reportedly because of a falling-out with Valdes after the player refused to play in a reserve game.

Although Jose Mourinho has replaced van Gaal in the Old Trafford hot seat, Valdes’ fortunes haven’t changed, so he’s now decided to call it quits and venture out in search of first team football.

For Middlesbrough, the 34-year-old is a very clever signing. Not only does he have bags of experience at the highest level, he is also not costing them a penny, as United are releasing him.

Young goalkeeper Connor Ripley has left the ‘Boro on loan in the wake of the signing.
