Arsenal are still searching for reinforcements between the sticks, with the Daily Mail reporting that young Dutch goalkeeper Guy Smit has been given a two-week trial with the Gunners.
The 20-year-old has just a fortnight to impress boss Arsene Wenger and should he be given a contract at the end of his trial, he will most likely be third-choice.
Although Petr Cech is reaching the twilight stage of his career, the Czech Republic stopper is expected to keep the number one spot for another season at the very least, while David Ospina has proven himself to a strong back-up option.
Since neither of their places are likely to come under threat, Smit’s trial does cast further doubt upon the future of Wojciech Szczesny.
The Polish goalkeeper spent last season on loan at Roma and the Serie A clubs have already spoken to Arsenal about retaining him for next season, if a dispute over his wages can be resolved.
If Smit were to sign on, that would surely be the end of Szczesny’s time in north London.
