Liverpool could fight Everton for Belgium midfielder

Liverpool could rival Everton for Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel, according to the Mirror.

Witsel, who plays for Zenit St Petersburg, is attracting plenty of attention and had recently been linked with a move to Merseyside – but to join Ronald Koeman at Everton.

Now, he could still be on a similar journey, but to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

That’s because the Reds have officially missed out on their previous target, Grzegorz Krychowiak, who has joined Paris Saint-Germain.

Witsel would be a solid alternative, and at 27, he has plenty of years ahead of him in the Premier League.

The former Benfica midfielder would add some solidity to Liverpool’s midfield, particularly as Jordan Henderson continues to struggle with injury.

Joe Allen could still be heading for Anfield’s exit, so it’s essential that Klopp bolsters the midfield before the start of the new season, which Liverpool will begin away to Arsenal.

Witsel is reportedly keen on a move to England, but it will be a tough decision if he has to choose between Liverpool and Everton.

Liverpool might be the bigger club historically, but with the ambition – and more importantly the funds – the Toffees have now got, it’s a close call who’s going to do better next season.
