Breel Embolo has shocked Manchester United by turning down the Red Devils in favour of a move to Schalke, according to the Guardian.
The Switzerland starlet was believed to be one of Jose Mourinho’s prime targets at Old Trafford, but he has now opted for the Bundesliga side instead.
The 19-year-old cost Schalke £20million, and while that seems a lot for a player of his age, he put in some impressive performances for Basel last season and followed that up with a decent campaign for Switzerland at Euro 2016.
Of course, it was not enough, as he didn’t score, and that led Switzerland to crash out of the tournament on penalties to Poland.
But several big clubs were already chasing him before the Euros, and he has now completed his move remarkably quickly, given that Switzerland only lost on Saturday.
Mourinho must be left reeling by the snub, but he will at least be buoyed by the fact that a deal for a more proven striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, is imminent.
