Mats Hummels reveals why he didn’t join Man United

Germany defender Mats Hummels’ transfer to Bayern Munich was completed last month, but the outgoing Borussia Dortmund captain has still chosen to stir up some more talk about his exit.

Hummels was linked with Manchester United and Arsenal, but after revealing the Gunners did not make an approach to sign him, he has revealed the one reason why he couldn’t allow himself to move to Old Trafford.

Speaking to German publication Suddeutsche Zeitung, he said:

“The overall package means: a club which fascinates me; a club I have always wanted to join, and where the sporting constellation is right, and which of course plays Champions League football next season.

“And because of the latter one club was ruled out, and you can envision which club that was.”

Hummels was almost certainly alluding to the fact that he had turned down United, despite the excitement building at the club because of the arrival of Jose Mourinho.

United feared that players might turn them down because they finished fifth in the Premier League last season, and it looks as if they were right.

Their lack of Champions League football doesn’t seem to be putting off Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who should join all the same, but the Sweden striker is in the twilight years of his career, while Hummels’ is in the prime of his.

Munich paid a fairly reasonable €37 million given Hummels’ quality, though if he really wants to test himself, he may want to consider moving to England.

The number of Dortmund players who have switched over to Bayern in recent years has led to concerns that the Bundesliga is losing its competitiveness,

Hummels’ future may be at Bayern for now, but in the future, he may need to move abroad if he is to prove himself as one of the great defenders.
