It’s a strange state of affairs when Everton are suddenly rivalling Chelsea for a player.
The Toffees’ recent takeover means that they now have financial muscle, albeit not of Roman Abramovich’s level, and Goal.com have it that they may use it to sign Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda.
Mandanda may have to choose between the two Premier League clubs, who are both in need of a goalkeeper.
Everton’s need is greater, as Tim Howard has left the club to return to his native America and they don’t have particularly high-calibre back-up.
Chelsea already have Thibaut Courtois, but the Belgian’s performances last season were underwhelming.
He was under pressure because of an ageing, frankly poor Chelsea defence, but he has not escaped blame.
After a difficult campaign, he is reportedly considering a move to Spain, which would leave new boss Antonio Conte without a number one, as Asmir Begovic is not expected to stay.
Mandanda has been at Marseille for eight years, but is now relishing a new challenge – and one that looks like it will be in the Premier League.
