Everton appoint Ronald Koeman – and he’s already got some huge transfer targets

Something unprecedented has happened at Goodison Park.

Not only have Everton finally appointed a new manager in Ronald Koeman, he is actually being given money to spend.

The departing Southampton manager will be given a huge £100million to turn the Toffees back into a top six side.

Given that the Dutchman has known the job was his for quite some time, he has already been considering how he is going to spend such a huge kitty.

The new man in charge is walking into a squad in disarray.

Leon Osman, Tony Hibbert, and Steven Pienaar have all been released, while Tim Howard is moving back to America.

To make matters worse, John Stones and Romelu Lukaku could be on their way to Chelsea.

That means Koeman needs a goalkeeper, a centre-back, at least one attacking midfielder and a striker.

Up front, the Liverpool Echo believe he is targeting West Brom striker Saido Berahino, which would be an astute move as he can offer a similar style of play to Lukaku.

And the Daily Star believes that replacing Howard in goal could be Premier League winner Kasper Schmeichel, with Everton set to offer Leicester £20million for his services.

The same paper has also identified an Ajax stopper, Jasper Cillessen as another target for Koeman, and perhaps a more realistic one at that.

Meanwhile, rumours of a bid for Nani, the ex-Manchester United Portuguese winger – as reported by Metro a while back – are ongoing, and it is believed the Fenerbache man is interested in coming back to England.

While Everton fans might turn up to Goodison to watch an almost unrecognisable team next season, something undoubtedly had to be done to arrest their slump.

Last season was particularly poor, but it cannot be blamed on Roberto Martinez alone. For over a decade, Everton haven’t invested in their squad sufficiently, so it’s no wonder they’ve been left behind.

This could be the first step towards putting that right.
