Since turning down the England job all those years ago, Jose Mourinho has tried not to get involved in the Three Lions’ affairs.
However, he couldn’t resist having his say on who he thinks their best player is, just days before they start Euro 2016 with a game against Russia.
Unsurprisingly, it’s Wayne Rooney.
The Portuguese boss told Sky Sports:
“Wayne is and has been England’s best player for over a decade and this game will be a fitting tribute to everything he has achieved.”
He may have been speaking about Rooney’s upcoming testimonial for United against his first club, Everton, but he may have inadvertently given the captain a timely boost as well.
Rooney has been under fire in recent weeks after a poor performance in the 1-0 win over Portugal, so he has something to prove to England fans.
Some have even called for him to be dropped, but Mourinho’s voice is always influential.
Who knows, he may have even had a quiet word in Roy Hodgson’s ear as well.
