Michael Carrick will stay at Manchester United for another year, according to Sky Sports.

The midfielder’s time at Old Trafford looked to be up, with former manager Louis van Gaal intent on releasing him at the end of last season.

Since Van Gaal’s sacking, though, the door has opened for Carrick to remain, albeit without playing very often.

The news has come about because Perth Glory were interested in signing the former Spurs and West Ham man, but Glory’s CEO Peter Filopoulos has revealed that Carrick is instead staying at United.

If he had been on the move, Perth were going to try and tempt him because Carrick is such good friends with one of their players, Richard Garcia, from their time together at West Ham.

United’s need appears to be greater because, with an influx of new stars set to arrive, Jose Mourinho needs an experienced head who knows his way around the club.

It looks like he is about to lose that in Ryan Giggs, who doesn’t want to be part of his coaching staff, so keeping hold of Carrick is vital, at least until Mourinho learns the ropes.
