It seems Arsene Wenger is getting so carried away with signing a striker that he has forgotten all about his defence.
Arsenal aren’t exactly thriving at the back, with the ever-slowing Per Mertesacker ageing another year and question marks remaining over whether Laurent Koscielny is up to scratch.
Nonetheless, the Daily Mail have it that Wenger is set to allow one of his back-up centre-backs, Calum Chambers, to join Watford on loan.
It’s a positive move by Watford, who can’t afford to splash out, and it will undoubtedly be a good experience for the young English defender, who made just two starts last season.
Then again, Wenger’s policy with regard to Chambers has never really made sense.
He paid Southampton £16million for him two years ago but has shown very little faith in him since.
In fact, that money may be the only reason he’s not letting him go altogether, as the club wouldn’t be able to make much of it back.
Wenger insists he hasn’t given up on Chambers, though, and if he has a good spell at Watford, he may just be able to force his way back into Wenger’s thinking – that is, of course, is the Frenchman is still there to make the decision in a year’s time.
