Jose Mourinho ready to offload 13 Manchester United players

Jose Mourinho doesn’t officially start at Manchester United until July, but he’s already making quite a statement in the transfer window.

As well as eyeing up potential targets, Mourinho is also planning to ship out plenty of dead wood.

In fact, according to Goal.com, there are 13 players who the incoming manager has no interest in keeping.

United could be almost unrecognisable next season if he gets his way and offloads all of the list which he revealed to the club’s chief executive chairman Ed Woodward.

Most of all, he is intent on selling Memphis Depay, Juan Mata, and Ander Herrera.

Mata is hardly surprising given Mourinho’s relationship with the Spaniard at Chelsea, while Memphis had a hugely disappointing first season under Louis van Gaal.

Herrera would possibly be a mistake, though, as he was not utilised enough under van Gaal and has huge potential.

The same can perhaps be said of Matteo Darmian, who is also on the list, as he should be given more of a chance to prove himself.

Michael Carrick, at the other end of the spectrum, could yet convince the Portuguese he is worthy of a place because of his experience, especially as he won’t be expecting to play every week.

The most bizarre inclusion on the list is Luke Shaw, who until a horrific leg break last year was one of the best left-backs in the country.

Mourinho could end up regretting the sale of some of the 13.

In other areas, though, he is right in thinking several players’ time at Old Trafford ought to be up.

Bastian Schweinsteiger and Marouane Fellaini are both surplus to requirements and will not aid Mourinho in convincing United fans he is capable of coaching an exciting brand of football.

Meanwhile, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young are no longer of United quality, and Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind have not done enough.

The final name who could be ousted is goalkeeper Sergio Romero, but as he was only ever a back-up for David de Gea, United need to make sure they bring in a suitable replacement first.
