ARSENAL are preparing a shock multi-million pound bid for Swansea skipper Ashley Williams, according to reports.
Despite Williams turning 32 later this year, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is still believed to be ready to part with a healthy sum in an attempt to bring the defender to The Emirates.
Arsenal’s attentions are said to have turned to Williams after main target Matts Hummels decided to swap Borussia Dortmund for Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich.
The Sunday Express reports: “The Wales skipper is reportedly the ‘leader’ that Arsene Wenger believes his side is currently missing.
“Williams, who has been instrumental to Swansea’s rise, is allegedly set to be the subject of a £20million offer this summer.
“It is believed that he will be sold by Swansea given his age should they receive a sizable offer.”
The centre-back has become something of a legend with the Swans, having made in excess of 300 appearances since joining from Stockport back in 2008.
While Williams is far from a typical Wenger signing given his age, Arsenal have lacked leadership at the back for several seasons now and the Welshman would certainly provide that as well as consistency and experience.
But at £20m, the question is would Wenger fork out that much for a player who may only have a handful of years left at the very top level?
