Man United watching talented Sporting pair

MANCHESTER UNITED scouts were in attendance at Sporting Lisbon’s recent 1-0 victory over Moreirense where they were keeping a watchful eye on Sporting duo William Carvalho and Joao Mario.

The Red Devils are already planning for life next season and are expected to make a number of big signings over the summer as they try to return to the top of English football after a disappointing campaign.

The Mirror reports: “Carvalho, 24, has been regularly observed my Old Trafford chiefs in recent years – while the central midfielder has also been a target for Premier League rivals Arsenal.

“However, 23-year-old Mario, who operates on the left wing, has only appeared on United’s radar in recent weeks after a stellar campaign with Sporting.”

Despite the Red Devils reaching the FA semi-finals, Jose Mourinho is still red-hot favourite to replace Louis van Gaal in the United hotseat this summer and it is thought he would welcome a raid of the Portuguese outfit’s hottest talents.

It wouldn’t be the first time the Old Trafford giants have taken the cream of Sporting’s young talent.

In 2003, Sir Alex Ferguson parted with what turned out to be a bargain £12.5million to sign a Cristiano Ronaldo, while four years later he returned to Portugal to snap up Nani.

Is Carvalho the answer to United’s long-standing central midfield issue?
