Re-signing midfielder should be one of Chelsea’s top priorities

Willian

CHELSEA have offered star performer Willian a new and vastly improved contract in a desperate bid to stop him leaving Stamford Bridge in the summer.

In a hugely disappointing season, the Brazilian midfielder has emerged as the club’s most important player but with the likelihood of no European football next campaign, Chelsea fear Willian may look elsewhere to continue his career.

The Daily Mail reports: “Failure to qualify for Europe next year has left the club vulnerable to bids for a host of their star names, with Eden Hazard and Diego Costa likely to leave Stamford Bridge.

“But though the Chelsea hierachy are willing to listen to offers for that pair, they want to do everything they can to ensure Willian is not part of the summer exodus.

“And Roman Abramovich wants to reward him with a 50 per cent increase on his current £80,000-a-week deal and ensure he plays a key role in the squad’s rebuilding programme.”

Since joining Chelsea for £30million from Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013 – after he’d looked certain to be heading to Tottenham – Willian has been a solid performer but this season his game has risen to a new level and the 27-year-old has been a shining light in a Chelsea side struggling to get out of the bottom half of the Premier League.

His work-rate is outstanding and he’s chipped in with a number of crucial goals, particularly from free-kicks.

Willian still has two-and-a-half years left on his original contract but there is no doubt he will be one of the more sought-after Chelsea players in the summer and fans will be crossing their fingers he accepts the richly deserved new offer.

Blues fans, should retaining Willian be the club’s priority this summer?
